What is Inferiority Complex?

An inferiority complex is a widespread belief that others are better, more accomplished, more attractive, and happier than oneself. People who have an inferiority complex struggle to feel good about themselves, their actions, and their lives in general. All other people appear superior, causing the individual to experience a variety of negative mental and physical health effects. An inferiority complex is not recognized as an official mental health diagnosis or disorder; however, the condition hurts people’s well-being. It is important to note that symptoms of long-term issues with confidence and self-esteem can overlap with those of an inferiority complex. As a result, people should always seek the advice of a mental health professional for individualized assessment and treatment.

Signs and Symptoms of Inferiority Complex

The following are examples of inferiority complex signs:

  • Poor eye contact, a soft tone of voice, and a passive communication style are all signs of a problem.

Causes of Inferiority Complex

The following are five factors associated with inferiority complexes:

  • Personality disorder with borderline characteristics (BPD)

A child who becomes the target of his or her parent’s irritability, sadness, or stress may develop the fear, doubt, and uncertainty. As the influence grows, the child may develop low self-esteem, difficulty gaining confidence, depression, and, in some cases, a full inferiority complex. A similar process is possible when a child is raised to associate feelings of shame and guilt with sex and sexuality. This complex can lead to anxiety, depression, and extreme self-consciousness.
